Mona Passage

Author: Thomas Bardenwerper

Publisher: Syracuse University Press

Release Date: December 15,2021

Rating: 5 out of 5.

The bond between neighbors can be as strong as family! Such a strong debut novel!

Galan Betances is a Cuban who emigrated to Florida when he was young.  The trip was terrible and although his whole family was supposed to make the journey, his mother grabbed his sister and jumped off the raft at the last minute, leaving Galan with his father who was determined to leave Cuba behind.  Several years later, Galan is now living in San Juan, Puerto Rico when he hears of his mother’s passing.  His sister, Gabriela, is still in Cuba and she is a simple person who cannot care for herself and family seem to want to put her in an institution rather than take care of her.  Plus, the Obama administration is changing the policy where Cubans will be viewed as any other immigrant.  His only hope may be to try to smuggle her into Puerto Rico through the Mona Passage, which is carefully guarded by the United States Coast Guard.

Pat McAllister is a coast guard lieutenant who has just taken a station in San Juan, Puerto Rico.  He patrols the open seas in a cutter built to outrun and overtake human traffickers.  His new neighbor, Galan, has been a tremendous help to get him situated around the town and takes care of him like an older brother.  Pat watched his own older brother suffer from his time in Iraq and wants to do his country proud, but when he learns of Galan’s problems, he knows he faces a crucial decision in his life.  Will he be loyal to his country?  Or his best friend?

What a storyline to begin closing out 2021.  Having spent a large amount of time in San Juan and Aguadilla personally, I jumped at the chance to read this story.  Needless to say, the author has either spent some time on the island himself or did some great research.  His knowledge of the way of life in San Juan was impeccable from who hangs out at which bar to what beer is served.  Not to mention the description of local cuisine made my mouth water.

Onto the story itself.  It takes no time at all to become friends with both Pat and Galan.  So much so that you grieve with Galan and want to knock some sense into Pat from time to time.  The characters were well fleshed out and realistic.  The tension that built up during the end of the story kept the pages turning so that I couldn’t put it down.  Sure, there is some language here and there, but nothing that takes away from the story.  There were also some sex related scenes, but nothing overally graphic.

Both main characters battle inner conflict throughout the book all the way until the ending.  Now, I’m really not a fan of the ending of this book. I get the purpose of it, but still.  It’s just not the way I wanted it to go, but sometimes an author has to do what an author has to do!

Crosshairs

Author: Patricia Bradley

Series: Natchez Trace Park Rangers #3

Publisher: Revell

Release Date: November 2, 2021

Rating: 5 out of 5.

Patricia Bradley’s newest installment in the Natchez Trace series is the best yet with more action, tension, and drama that keeps the pages flying!

When Ainsley Beaumont’s dream of a career in singing fell through, she joined the Investigative Services Branch and became a ranger. She is sent to her hometown of Natchez Mississippi to figure out who murdered a pregnant teenager. While she is investigating, Ainsley quickly becomes the killer’s next target and has to work with an old flame to solve the case. Lin Steele is a former FBI sniper that put his gun away after almost killing an innocent child. Linc can’t bring himself to pick up a gun again after what happened, but as the danger to Ainsley increases along with his feelings, he wonders if he will be able to help her without the use of his weapon.

Patricia Bradley has crafted an incredible series with characters that I instantly fell in love with and wanted to make sure they made it to a safe and happy ending. The plot was more intricate and detailed than past installments giving me a deeper desire to see these characters find happiness. As with most romantic suspense novels, our main characters have a history together and when they end up working together the old feelings get stirred up making things more complicated between them. Sometimes this works and sometimes it doesn’t; here I enjoyed the dynamic between Ainsley and Linc and how that shaped the rest of the story. The secondary characters brought out a lighter side to the story, especially Cora and the rest of Ainsley’s family, except her father, the tension between them was tighter and gave more depth to the story. This was the best of the series for me and even though it is the third in the series, each book can be read on its own without missing anything from the others to make the story whole. I recommend this book to readers that enjoy romantic suspense and want a good story that will keep them turning the pages lost in the action.

The Happy Crab

Authors: Layla and Kevin Palmer

Illustrator: Guy Wolek

Publisher: Bethany House

Release Date: October 12, 2021

Rating: 5 out of 5.

Fun story for beginning readers!

Are crabs curious by nature?  At least one is and he is off bouncing around from adventure to adventure.  He’s been catching waves from Haiti to Pensacola Beach to the Santa Rosa Sound.  But one day the unexpected happens; while taking a nap from all his activity, he suddenly finds himself plucked out of the water by a human.  A little boy finds his perfect shell and decides that he wants to take it home and keep it.  Will this be the end of the crab’s adventures or is he about to have his biggest one yet?

This is such a fun, vibrant book that young readers will enjoy reading again and again.  The lettering is big and bold, making it easy for young readers to follow along or sound out along the way. The illustrations are top notch and will catch readers’ eyes and make them study them as they read along.  The story line is delightful and teaches children the importance of natural habitats and that even when they find something they want to keep, it might not be theirs to begin with.

Lights Out

Author: Natalie Walters

Series: The Snap Agency #1

Publisher: Revell

Release Date: November 2, 2021

Rating: 5 out of 5.

A new hit that romantic suspense fans will not want to miss! Natalie Walters is quickly making a name for herself in this genre!

Brynn Taylor is a CIA analyst who has developed a program to take down terrorists before they get a chance to attack. When one of the members of a foreign intelligence agency she invited to work on the program goes missing, she must work with Jack Hudson and the Strategic Neutralization and Protection Agency. Jack and Brynn have a history and working together is no easy task. Every clue they uncover puts them in more danger and deeper into the international plot they have uncovered. They must work together in order to stop a terrorist trying to cause a digital blackout in order to blind the US military. If Brynn and Jack can’t get over the hurt in their past, they may not be able to solve the case that leaves lives and their hearts hanging by a thread.

Lights Out was a really great book. I probably could have read this in one sitting if I hadn’t been sick and had to put it down for two weeks. This is the first book in Walters new series and it starts with a bang. There are so many secondary characters that I can’t wait to see how they develop in the upcoming books in the series. Brynn was a great lead character that kept me engaged and I easily connected with her hoping to see her succeed in both life and love. The dynamic between her and Jack kept the tension tight all the way through, along with the playful banter with Lyla and the other members of the SNAP team. I can’t wait to see how it all unfolds as the story continues with the next in the series. The story flows at a good pace and the ending was very satisfactory unlike some romantic suspense that tie things up too quickly. I recommend this book to fans of romantic suspense and fans of Walters writing will not want to miss this one.

Christmas in the Alps is an easy, but predictable read. A lovely story of Christmas and family.  Melody Carlson just has a way of creating fun characters that you love to read about that manage to find a way to your heart.  Simone seemed weak at first, but managed to conquer her fears and gain so much more than just freedom.  Her story is one that readers will enjoy for years to come.  Easily a book that readers will want to read again each year.

Deadly Target

Author: Elizabeth Goddard

Series: Rocky Mountain Courage #2

Publisher: Revell

Release Date: November 2, 2021

Rating: 5 out of 5.

Another great romantic suspense novel with characters readers will fall in love with and a storyline that never slows down!

Erin Larson is a criminal psychologist whose career and life are almost over after a boating accident. Shortly thereafter, she learns that her mother has tried to commit suicide. Taking a leave of absence from her job to care for her mother, she moves to Montana and focuses her attention on a podcast of missing person cold cases that go all the way back to her childhood. Nathan Campbell’s case calls to Erin when her mother is in the hospital bringing their past relationship to the surface. When his father is shot investigating a case, Nathan asks Erin to help him get to the bottom of what is happening. As they work together, they determine they are being targeted and the more they uncover the more danger they are all in.

Deadly Target started great but ended even better. I loved the turn it took, sucking me into the story even more. Each problem Erin encounters leads to another clue being uncovered about a past she wants to leave behind. Goddard did a fantastic job of creating a story and characters that I couldn’t help but root for and want to know all of their deepest, darkest secrets. The story flowed at a very smooth pace and never made me want to put the book down. I finished the story in a single day.

Erin is a strong female lead that carries the story in a way that is easy to follow and believable. This is the second book in the series but can be read on its own without missing out on much from the first in the series. There are some secondary characters from the first that make an appearance, but it won’t take away from the story itself. I love the way it wrapped up and characters we thought weren’t important played an important role by the end. I recommend this book to fans of romantic suspense and if you haven’t given Elizabeth Goddard a chance, I would pick this one up immediately.

Her Name is Knight

Author: Yasmin Angoe

Series: Nena Knight #1

Publisher: Thomas & Mercer

Release Date: November 1, 2021

Rating: 4 out of 5.

A fun and energetic story told in dual timelines laid out perfectly!

Nena Knight, as she is called today, was stolen as a child from her Ghanaian village and sold to the highest bidder. Her life was a nightmare until she was able to escape. Once she did, she managed to become part of a family that loved and cared for her and took her

into the family business where she became an elite assassin for a powerful group called the Tribe. On her latest assignment, she ends up saving a life instead of ending one which changes everything for her. The life she saved is a man she starts to fall for causing her family and the Tribe problems. The newest member of the Tribe turns out to be the man that destroyed her village and sold her into captivity. She wants vengeance more than anything, but she is also afraid to lose the family she has worked so hard to gain over the last decade.

Her Name is Knight is a really great novel for a debut author. The story is entertaining, fun, and contains characters that I wanted to follow. Nena especially, but her sister got on my nerves at times. The back and forth between past and present can sometimes get confusing but the way Angoe went about writing it really worked for me.   The story was great and flowed well, but there was a lot of over-the-top foul language that I just didn’t feel had to be included throughout the whole story.  This is recommended for mature audiences.

Slothy Claus

Author: Jodie Shepherd

Illustrator: MacKenzie Haley

Publisher: Tommy Nelson

Release Date: November 2, 2021

Rating: 5 out of 5.

A different, but fun take on discovering the true meaning of Christmas.

All the animals can’t wait for Old Slothy Claus to bring presents for Christmas this year, but sloths do need to move a little slower than expected and sleep a little more than other animals.  So, when Christmas day rolls round, there is a surprise for all when Slothy can’t get finished up to leave out.  When all the kids wake up without new toys or games, they are very sad, at first.  But then they begin to discover what the true meaning of Christmas is and how it’s not the material things that matter.

This was such a fun take on the Santa Claus story.  I love how at first everyone was sad like in the Grinch, but then they found out that all they need is each other with kindness, grace, hope, & love.  This is a great book to help kids understand that its not the new toys and presents they get, but the love from the person who gave it to them that matters.  The word font is large for new readers to read along with or try out on their own.  The pictures and illustrations are fantastic.  Great addition to a kid’s library!
